Los trabajadores solitarios del sector de la hostelería y la restauración, incluidos los trabajadores de la hostelería y la restauración, están expuestos a diversos riesgos, como amenazas verbales, violencia física y robos, levantamiento y traslado de objetos, movimientos repetitivos que provocan lesiones ergonómicas y exposición a sustancias químicas o biológicas.

Además de éstos, los riesgos ambientales como resbalones, tropiezos, caídas, amenazas potenciales de vehículos en movimiento y riesgos de electrocución son habituales en el sector de la hostelería.

Factores que Contribuyen a Aumentar el Riesgo

  1. El aislamiento es un factor de riesgo importante para los trabajadores solitarios del sector de la hostelería. Estar solo restringe el apoyo inmediato durante las emergencias, los hace más susceptibles a la violencia y puede inducir estrés psicológico que afecta a su capacidad de toma de decisiones.
  2. La falta de supervisión cercana o directa puede llevar a los trabajadores solitarios a asumir mayores riesgos en comparación con cuando trabajan con un compañero, haciéndoles más propensos a tomar decisiones subóptimas en materia de salud y seguridad.
  3. Los trabajadores solitarios son más vulnerables a la violencia física, las agresiones, las amenazas verbales, las enfermedades, los robos y los intrusos debido a su aislamiento y a la ausencia de ayuda inmediata.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • Un asombroso 81% de los trabajadores solitarios, incluidos los del sector de la hostelería, han expresado su preocupación por la violencia y las agresiones, con una media de 150 ataques denunciados al día.
  • Alrededor de 8.900 trabajadores del sector de la hostelería y la restauración sufren accidentes laborales cada año en Columbia Británica. Más de la mitad de estos trabajadores tienen que ausentarse del trabajo a causa de sus lesiones. Los tipos de lesiones van desde cortes graves, quemaduras y escaldaduras hasta distensiones, esguinces y fracturas óseas.
  • Según la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales, el promedio de lesiones y enfermedades laborales es de 5,8 por cada 100 trabajadores de hotel a tiempo completo, frente a 4,4 en el conjunto de la industria privada.
  • Las amas de llaves y otros trabajadores de la hostelería tienen que entrar en las habitaciones de los huéspedes como parte de su trabajo. Esto a veces significa que están solos con los huéspedes en sus habitaciones y los expone a un mayor riesgo de abuso físico, verbal y sexual. De hecho, una encuesta de 2018 informa que nueve de cada 10 trabajadores de la hostelería han sufrido agresiones sexuales en algún momento de su carrera.
  • En un periodo de diez años, los trabajadores de hoteles y restaurantes presentaron 5.000 denuncias por acoso sexual, una cifra superior a la de cualquier otro sector.
