  • Las personas que tienen varios trabajos o que trabajan muchas horas pueden no tener tiempo suficiente para dormir.
  • La falta de sueño puede estar causada por otros trastornos del sueño o afecciones médicas como la apnea del sueño, un trastorno respiratorio que provoca decenas de despertares nocturnos. Otros problemas médicos o mentales, como el dolor o el trastorno de ansiedad generalizada, pueden interferir en la calidad y cantidad del sueño.
  • La forma más básica de tratamiento de la privación del sueño consiste en dormir una cantidad adecuada de horas, normalmente de 7 a 9 horas cada noche.
  • Los principales signos y síntomas de la privación del sueño incluyen somnolencia diurna excesiva y deterioro diurno como disminución de la concentración, pensamiento más lento y cambios de humor.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • Casi la mitad de los estadounidenses afirman sentir sueño durante el día entre tres y siete días a la semana.
  • Las personas de 35 a 64 años son las más propensas a no dormir lo suficiente. El 61% de los canadienses afirma que la calidad de su sueño es buena.
  • El 21% de los accidentes de coche se deben a la falta de sueño. Dormir menos de 6 horas por noche aumenta regularmente el riesgo de cardiopatía coronaria en un 48%.
  • El 30% de los canadienses padece insomnio y el 2,2% apnea obstructiva del sueño.
  • La falta de sueño está relacionada con el estrés crónico: el 36,3% de las personas que duermen menos de lo recomendado declaran sentirse crónicamente deprimidas.
  • Invertir en un colchón nuevo puede mejorar la calidad del sueño hasta en un 55%.
  • Sólo dos raciones de alcohol cerca de la hora de acostarse pueden disminuir la calidad del sueño en un 39,2%.
  • El 35,2% de todos los adultos de EE.UU. afirman dormir de media menos de siete horas por noche.
  • En comparación con los blancos, los adultos de raza negra tienen casi el doble de probabilidades de decir que duermen poco y un 60% más de probabilidades de decir que duermen demasiado.
  • El 42,6% de las familias monoparentales duermen menos de siete horas por noche, frente al 32,7% de los adultos en hogares biparentales y el 31% de los adultos sin hijos.
  • Los CDC informan de que el 35% de los estadounidenses duermen menos de las siete horas necesarias. El sueño insuficiente es una de las principales causas de la somnolencia diurna excesiva, que se cree que afecta hasta al 18% de la población estadounidense.
