QUÉ ESTÁ EN RIESGO

Cuando los contratistas llegan al lugar de trabajo, los peligros no toman un día libre, aunque a veces los hábitos de seguridad sí. Los contratistas son responsables de su propio trabajo, pero comparten el mismo espacio. Lo que les pasa a ellos te puede pasar a ti.

CUÁL ES EL PELIGRO

Los contratistas aportan habilidades que tu equipo puede no tener, pero también traen hábitos desconocidos, niveles de capacitación inciertos e ideas diferentes sobre cómo se deben hacer las cosas. En esa brecha es donde ocurren los accidentes.

No Conocen Tu Lugar de Trabajo

  • Los contratistas pueden no saber dónde están los peligros en tu piso o tu patio
  • Las salidas de emergencia, el almacenamiento de productos químicos y las zonas restringidas pueden ser completamente nuevas para ellos
  • Pueden no conocer tus procedimientos de bloqueo/etiquetado ni a quién llamar en caso de emergencia

Diferentes Estándares de Seguridad

Es posible que la empresa de un contratista tenga normas de seguridad muy diferentes a las tuyas. Eso no significa que sus normas sean incorrectas, pero las discrepancias generan confusión, y la confusión genera riesgos.

Zonas de Trabajo Sin Supervisión

Los contratistas a veces trabajan en áreas que el personal habitual no supervisa. Si algo sale mal y nadie lo nota, el tiempo de respuesta aumenta y los resultados empeoran.

Prisa al Final del Proyecto

  • Los plazos provocan que se hagan atajos
  • La fatiga se acumula en proyectos largos
  • Los trabajadores de ambos lados pueden bajar la guardia cuando la meta está en vista

CÓMO PROTEGERSE

No tienes que gestionar a los contratistas, pero sí necesitas trabajar con seguridad a su alrededor.

Conoce a Quién Está Trabajando Cerca de Ti

Presta atención a quién opera en tu área. Si ves una cara desconocida en una zona restringida, cerca de un equipo que no parece conocer, o en algún lugar donde claramente no debería estar, infórmale a tu supervisor. No se trata de desconfiar, sino de asegurarse de que todos en el lugar cuenten con la información necesaria para mantenerse seguros.

Comparte lo que Sabes

  • Si conoces un peligro cerca del área de trabajo de un contratista, infórmale a tu supervisor de inmediato; no asumas que alguien más ya lo mencionó
  • Infórmales sobre zonas de derrames químicos, áreas de acceso restringido o equipos que tienen particularidades que podrían no esperar
  • Un aviso rápido no te cuesta nada y podría prevenir un incidente grave

No Dejes que Sus Atajos Se Conviertan en los Tuyos

Si ves a un contratista saltarse un paso de seguridad y parece más rápido o fácil, eso no es una señal verde. Tu lugar de trabajo, tus reglas: cúmplelas. Si sus atajos están creando un peligro para ti o tus compañeros, repórtalo. No estás delatando; estás haciendo tu trabajo.

Habla Sobre el Trabajo Inseguro

  • No necesitas confrontar directamente a un contratista; ese no es tu rol
  • Reporta lo que ves a tu supervisor y deja que él maneje la conversación
  • Permanecer en silencio cuando notas un peligro te pone a ti, a tus compañeros y al contratista en riesgo

Mayor Cuidado al Cierre del Proyecto

Los últimos días de un proyecto son a menudo los más peligrosos. Todos están cansados, los plazos se acercan, la limpieza se hace a las carreras, y las herramientas o equipos pueden acabar en lugares inesperados. Cuando el ritmo se acelera a tu alrededor, esa es tu señal para reducir la velocidad y prestar especial atención a lo que te rodea.

CONCLUSIÓN

Los contratistas son parte de tu equipo por un tiempo; trátalos así. Comparte lo que sabes, mantén consciencia de lo que hacen cerca y no dejes que un plazo empuje a nadie a tomar una decisión peligrosa.
