El carguero Golden Ray zozobró debido a unos cálculos de estabilidad inexactos.

El vuelco del carguero Golden Ray frente a la costa de Georgia hace dos años, que provocó daños por más de 200 millones de dólares, fue causado por cálculos incorrectos sobre la estabilidad del buque, dijo el martes la Junta Nacional de Seguridad en el Transporte.

En su informe sobre la investigación del vuelco de septiembre de 2019, la NTSB también encontró que dos puertas herméticas se habían dejado abiertas, lo que provocó que el buque se inundara después de volcar. La inundación atrapó a cuatro miembros de la tripulación que fueron rescatados más tarde.

Los trabajadores empezaron a desmontar el buque de 656 pies y a sacarlo del agua por secciones en febrero de 2020. Hicieron el corte final a principios de este mes y tienen dos secciones más que retirar, según el Mando Unificado de Incidentes de St. Simons Sound.

El Golden Ray transportaba 4.100 vehículos y 24 tripulantes cuando volcó mientras viajaba por St. Simons Sound. Al final, el fuego, las inundaciones y la corrosión del agua salada hicieron que el barco fuera declarado siniestro total por un valor estimado de 62,5 millones de dólares, según informó la NTSB en su informe, y que se perdiera una carga por valor estimado de 142 millones de dólares.

La causa probable del vuelco fue un error del primer oficial al introducir las cantidades de lastre en el programa de cálculo de la estabilidad, según el informe de la NTSB. Ello significó que el buque tenía menos estabilidad de la calculada por el primer oficial, según el informe.

El operador del buque tampoco disponía de procedimientos para verificar los cálculos del oficial jefe, por lo que el operador y el capitán del buque no sabían que el Golden Ray navegaba sin cumplir los requisitos de estabilidad, según la NTSB.
