WHAT’S AT STAKE
Handling and transporting CO2 canisters safely is critical to prevent accidents and ensure our restaurant runs smoothly. Let’s talk about how to do this effectively and safely.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Moving Canisters:
- Use a Cart: Always use a hand truck or cart specifically designed for transporting gas canisters. Secure the canister tightly to the cart to prevent it from falling over.
- Avoid Dropping: Never drop a CO2 canister. Dropping can damage the canister or cause a sudden release of gas, which is dangerous.
- No Stairs: Avoid using stairs when moving canisters. Use the service elevator. If you must use stairs, get help and take extra precautions.
Switching Canisters:
- Turn Off the Main Valve: Before removing an empty canister, ensure the main valve is completely turned off.
- Relieve Pressure: After turning off the valve, relieve any pressure in the connecting hose or line to avoid a sudden release when disconnecting.
- Check Connections: When attaching a new canister, ensure all connections are secure before opening the valve. Check for leaks every time you switch canisters.
General Tips:
- Stay Informed: Know where CO2 canisters are located in our restaurant and familiarize yourself with the switching and transport procedures.
- No Shortcuts: Always follow the proper steps for handling, transporting, and switching canisters. Shortcuts can lead to accidents.
FINAL WORD
Handling and transporting CO2 safely is everyone’s responsibility. Always be cautious and alert when working with or near CO2 canisters. If you see something wrong, or if you’re unsure about a procedure, speak up. Your safety and the safety of your teammates are paramount.
