  • El Golpe de Calor es una Emergencia Médica: El golpe de calor ocurre cuando la temperatura central del cuerpo supera los 104 °F y el sistema de enfriamiento falla. Sin una intervención inmediata, puede causar daño cerebral, fallo orgánico y la muerte, y puede desarrollarse rápidamente en trabajadores que aún no se han aclimatado a las altas temperaturas.
  • El Estrés por Frío se Presenta Silenciosamente: La hipotermia puede aparecer a temperaturas muy por encima del punto de congelación, especialmente cuando un trabajador está mojado, fatigado o expuesto al viento. Un trabajador que tiembla sin poder controlarlo puede estar ya en peligro —y es posible que no se dé cuenta.
  • Las Temporadas Intermedias son Engañosas: La primavera y el otoño traen condiciones inestables en las que las temperaturas pueden cambiar drásticamente en un solo turno, dejando a los trabajadores con ropa de más, mal preparados o tomados por sorpresa cuando las condiciones cambian sin previo aviso.

  • La Congelación Causa Daño Permanente: La congelación congela la piel y el tejido subyacente y, en casos graves, lleva a la amputación. La sensación térmica puede reducir las temperaturas efectivas muy por debajo de la lectura de la temperatura del aire, acelerando su aparición más rápido de lo que los trabajadores esperan.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • Según el Consejo Nacional de Seguridad, la exposición al calor ambiental provocó 48 muertes relacionadas con el trabajo en EE. UU. en 2024 y 7,100 casos registrados en el DART durante el período 2023–2024.
  • De 2017 a 2022, la OSHA investigó 1,054 lesiones, enfermedades y muertes en el lugar de trabajo relacionadas con el calor, incluidas 625 hospitalizaciones y 211 muertes.
  • Aproximadamente 28 000 lesiones laborales en EE. UU. al año están relacionadas con trabajar en días calurosos, y el riesgo de lesiones aumenta drásticamente una vez que el índice de calor supera los 90 °F, según una investigación de 2025 realizada por la Universidad George Washington y la Escuela de Salud Pública T.H. Chan de Harvard.
  • El promedio de tres años de muertes de trabajadores relacionadas con el calor en EE. UU. se ha duplicado desde principios de la década de 1990, según un análisis de datos de la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales (BLS) realizado por la Radio Pública Nacional (NPR) y Columbia Journalism Investigations.
  • De 2003 a 2019, la exposición al frío ambiental provocó 31 muertes de trabajadores y 2,770 lesiones y enfermedades graves en EE. UU., lo que representa un promedio de aproximadamente 163 incidentes relacionados con el frío por año, según la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales.
