Accidente de los Chicos de Bathurst

El accidente se produjo en la ruta 8 de New Brunswick poco después de la medianoche del 12 de enero, cuando el entrenador del equipo conducía al equipo de baloncesto del Bathurst High School hacia el norte de regreso de un partido en Moncton contra los Purple Knights del Moncton High School en un E350 Ford Club Wagon. La ligera lluvia helada y la escasa visibilidad crearon unas condiciones de conducción deficientes y resbaladizas. Cuando la furgoneta se acercaba a los límites de la ciudad de Bathurst, el entrenador perdió el control y viró delante de un camión semirremolque que iba en dirección sur. El camión colisionó con el lateral de la furgoneta y los dos vehículos quedaron detenidos en el arcén del carril sur de la autopista, a unos 40 metros del punto de impacto.

El agente de policía que descubrió el siniestro sospechó inicialmente que sólo el semirremolque se había salido de la carretera. Tras investigar más a fondo, encontró la furgoneta y llamó a los servicios de emergencia, cuya llegada se vio retrasada por la lluvia helada. La pared trasera y gran parte del lateral derecho de la furgoneta, incluidas tres filas de asientos, habían sido arrancadas, expulsando a varios ocupantes.

Siete jugadores de entre 15 y 17 años y la esposa del entrenador del equipo, de 51 años, fueron declarados muertos en el lugar de los hechos. El entrenador, su hija y los otros dos jugadores sobrevivieron al accidente y fueron trasladados al Hospital Regional Chaleur de Bathurst. De los heridos, uno se encontraba en estado crítico y los otros dos estables. El cuarto fue dado de alta poco después del accidente. El conductor del camión no resultó herido.
