El Ministerio de Trabajo de EE. UU. constata que algunos contratistas hicieron caso omiso de una norma de seguridad, lo que provocó la caída de un trabajador desde una altura de 65 pies desde un andamio trepante

Lo que sucedió

El 7 de diciembre de 2021, un trabajador sufrió una caída de aproximadamente 65 pies desde un andamio móvil elevado en una obra de construcción en Denver, y sufrió lesiones graves mientras trabajaba en la construcción de un hueco de ascensor y una escalera de concreto. Una investigación federal llevada a cabo por la OSHA reveló que el contratista y sus subcontratistas habían ignorado la advertencia explícita del fabricante del andamio, que prohibía utilizar el andamio trepante mientras se izaba hasta la parte superior de una grúa independiente. El contratista general del proyecto autorizó a los trabajadores a subir al andamio trepante y a desplazarse por él mientras una grúa izaba el sistema hacia arriba —un uso que nunca se había previsto ni aprobado para el transporte de personal—. El andamio quedó a una altura inadecuada y el trabajador sufrió una caída de aproximadamente 65 pies hasta el suelo.

Lo que sucedió

La OSHA emitió una multa por infracción deliberada en contra del subcontratista por haber permitido que sus empleados utilizaran un equipo izado por una grúa para llegar a la zona de trabajo en altura, con multas propuestas que ascienden a 101 519 dólares. El contratista general recibió una multa por infracción grave con multas propuestas por un total de 14 502 dólares, y otra empresa de montaje de estructuras metálicas recibió una multa por infracción grave con multas propuestas por un total de 5 801 dólares por el uso peligroso de una grúa. Se ignoró la advertencia de seguridad del fabricante y no se utilizó ningún otro método seguro para izar a los trabajadores.

Conclusión

La Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales indica que 351 de los 1 008 trabajadores de la construcción que fallecieron en el trabajo en 2020 fueron víctimas de caídas desde alturas. Una sola decisión —ignorar la advertencia del fabricante sobre el uso de andamios— llevó a un trabajador a encontrarse a 65 pies de altura, sin ningún margen de error. Los andamios deben montarse, ser accesibles y utilizarse exactamente como fueron diseñados y aprobados.
