Muere un tripulante durante una operación de amarre

Para amarrar el cable de remolque de popa, el cabo mensajero del buque se bajó al remolcador a través del pasacabo central de popa del Panamá. El oficial del remolcador recibió el cabo y lo ató al cabo mensajero del remolcador, que a su vez fue atado al cable de remolque de acero. El equipo de amarre de popa del carguero recogió la holgura de los cabos mensajeros e intentó levantar el cable de remolque a mano.

El oficial del remolcador se dio cuenta de lo que intentaba hacer la tripulación del carguero y les indicó, gritando y haciendo gestos con las manos, que debían utilizar un cabrestante para izar el cable de remolque. El cable de remolque de acero del remolcador tenía 44 mm de diámetro y pesaba 7,8 kg/m. Aunque el uso de cables de acero es habitual, un número significativo de remolcadores utiliza cabos de remolque fabricados con fibra sintética. Estos materiales son mucho más ligeros que un cable de acero de diámetro y resistencia equivalentes, por lo que a menudo pueden izarse a mano.

El equipo de amarre del carguero decidió entonces organizar la operación de remolque.

El carpintero había dado aproximadamente entre ocho y diez vueltas de la gruesa línea de mensajería alrededor del tambor. Estas vueltas se acumularon hacia el extremo exterior del tambor a medida que éste giraba debido al ángulo del plomo desde el guía de pedestal. El extremo libre del cabo se enredó en las vueltas, lo que provocó que se introdujera en el tambor de urdimbre con la pieza bajo tensión. Mientras esto ocurría, el cable de remolque subió a la cubierta del carguero y la argolla de remolque casi alcanzó la bita de popa.

A medida que continuaba el oleaje, el cabo de remolque se deslizó por el lateral del tambor de urdimbre, haciendo que el cable de remolque volviera a caer hacia el remolcador. Esto se repitió en varios intentos hasta que en un momento dado, cuando el carpintero estaba con la cabeza a pocos centímetros del tambor, se le oyó gritar. El segundo oficial detuvo el cabrestante y se acercó rápidamente al extremo del tambor. Allí encontró al carpintero desplomado hacia delante sobre el cabo mensajero, con un lazo de cuerda colgando flojo alrededor del cuello. Tras recibir atención médica en el puerto, la víctima fue declarada muerta debido a una fractura luxación de la columna cervical.
