El 20 de diciembre de 2018, un conductor de camión masculino de 51 años (víctima) resultó fatalmente herido mientras operaba un montacargas de pie en un muelle de carga elevado en un centro de productos agrícolas.

El montacargas se cayó del muelle de carga causando que la víctima cayera fuera del área del operador del montacargas y el montacargas luego cayó parcialmente encima de él.

Un compañero de trabajo llamó inmediatamente a los servicios médicos de urgencia (SEM). A continuación, unas 20 personas, algunas de ellas compañeros de trabajo, levantaron la carretilla elevadora y la quitaron de encima de la víctima.

La policía local y el SEM llegaron al lugar del incidente en cuestión de minutos. La víctima fue trasladada a un hospital local, donde se declaró su fallecimiento cinco días después.

Los factores contribuyentes identificados en esta investigación incluían la utilización de carretillas elevadoras en muelles de carga sin barreras protectoras en los bordes y la falta de un sistema de retención del operador de la carretilla elevadora.

El programa FACE de Massachusetts llegó a la conclusión de que, para evitar sucesos similares en el futuro, los empresarios deberían:

  • Prohibir las carretillas elevadoras en los muelles de carga que no estén equipados con barreras protectoras en los bordes; y
  • Considerar la posibilidad de instalar barreras protectoras en el borde del muelle de carga para minimizar la posibilidad de que los empleados y el equipo se caigan del muelle de carga.

Además, los fabricantes de carretillas elevadoras deberían

  • Adoptar y aplicar el concepto de Prevención a través del Diseño y rediseñar la zona del operador de la carretilla elevadora contrapesada de pie para incluir sistemas de retención.
