El trabajador está lijando o raspando superficies pintadas sin protección respiratoria, guantes ni ropa protectora, lo que genera una gran cantidad de polvo. Si la pintura contiene plomo, esto supone un grave peligro de inhalación e ingestión. El polvo de plomo puede entrar en los pulmones o contaminar las manos, la ropa y las superficies cercanas, lo que provoca intoxicación crónica por plomo, que afecta al sistema nervioso, los riñones y la salud reproductiva.

Cuando se alteren superficies pintadas antiguas, se debe asumir la presencia de plomo a menos que se haya comprobado lo contrario. Los trabajadores deben utilizar el equipo de protección personal adecuado, incluyendo un respirador aprobado por el NIOSH, overoles desechables, guantes y gafas de seguridad. Implemente medidas de control del polvo (lijado en húmedo, aspiradoras HEPA) y aísle el área de trabajo.
