  5. Interacciones Químicas y Daños Materiales: El DEET puede degradar ciertos materiales sintéticos (por ejemplo, spandex, plásticos), y combinarlo con protector solar puede reducir la protección solar.
  6. Preocupación por la Seguridad Infantil: Los niños pequeños pueden ingerir los repelentes; Canadá recomienda concentraciones de DEET no superiores al 10% para niños menores de 12 años.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • En 2024, la OSHA registró 5.190 muertes en el lugar de trabajo, de las cuales el 21% (1.090 casos) se produjeron en el sector del paisajismo y la construcción. Las muertes relacionadas con insectos son poco frecuentes (<1%), pero las lesiones secundarias por picaduras (por ejemplo, caídas debidas a picaduras) ponen de relieve la necesidad de EPP y repelentes.
  • En 2024, las infracciones relacionadas con los EPP (29 CFR 1910.132) ocuparon el sexto lugar en las industrias al aire libre (1.876 citaciones), incluida la ropa de protección inadecuada para tareas propensas a los insectos. Las infracciones en materia de comunicación de riesgos (29 CFR 1910.1200) ocuparon el 2º lugar (3.200 citaciones), a menudo debido a una formación inadecuada sobre repelentes.
  • Los CDC informaron de 47.000 casos de enfermedad de Lyme en 2022, y los trabajadores al aire libre (por ejemplo, paisajistas) corren un mayor riesgo. La ropa adecuada y los repelentes podrían prevenir hasta el 80% de las picaduras de garrapatas, según NIOSH.
  • WorkSafeBC informó de 25-30 muertes anuales en ocupaciones al aire libre en Columbia Británica (2020-2023), con incidentes relacionados con insectos poco frecuentes pero que contribuyen a lesiones secundarias como caídas (15%) durante el trabajo en árboles.
  • Los datos de CCOHS 2023 mostraron que los lugares de trabajo que aplicaban ropa de manga larga y repelentes redujeron las lesiones relacionadas con insectos en un 18%, sobre todo en jardinería y arboricultura.
  • En 2024, Ontario introdujo multas de hasta 500.000 dólares por infracciones reiteradas en materia de salud y seguridad en el trabajo, incluido el incumplimiento de las normas sobre EPP, que afectan a las empresas que no proporcionan ropa de protección o formación sobre repelentes a los trabajadores al aire libre.
