El peor desastre marítimo de Estados Unidos en décadas
El siniestro

En el momento del naufragio, el FARO realizaba un viaje nacional estadounidense con una carga completa de contenedores y carga rodada con destino a Jacksonville (Florida) y San Juan (Puerto Rico).

Cuando el EL FARO salió del puerto el 29 de septiembre de 2015, un sistema meteorológico tropical que se había formado al este de las islas Bahamas estaba intensificando rápidamente su fuerza. El sistema tormentoso evolucionó hasta convertirse en el huracán Joaquín y desafió las previsiones meteorológicas y el seguimiento estándar de huracanes de la cuenca atlántica al desplazarse hacia el suroeste. Mientras se recibían diversas actualizaciones meteorológicas a bordo de EL FARO, el capitán dirigió el buque hacia el sur del rumbo directo a San Juan, que era la ruta normal.

La desviación hacia el sur del capitán acabó dirigiendo al EL FARO casi directamente hacia el huracán que se estaba fortaleciendo. Cuando el FARO comenzó a encontrarse con mar gruesa y vientos asociados con las bandas exteriores del huracán Joaquín, el buque sufrió una escora prolongada a estribor y comenzó a hacer agua intermitentemente en el interior del buque. Poco después de las 5:30 AM de la mañana del 1 de octubre de 2015, se identificó una inundación en una de las grandes bodegas de carga del buque.

Al mismo tiempo, los ingenieros de EL FARO luchaban por mantener la propulsión a medida que aumentaba la escora y el movimiento del buque. Después de hacer un giro para cambiar la escora del buque a babor, con el fin de cerrar una escotilla abierta, EL FARO perdió la propulsión y comenzó a ir a la deriva por los vientos huracanados y el mar.

Aproximadamente a las 7:00 AM, sin propulsión y con una inundación incontrolada, el Capitán notificó a su compañía y dio la señal de socorro utilizando el sistema de comunicación de socorro por satélite del EL FARO. Poco después de la señal de socorro, el Capitán ordenó el abandono del buque. En ese momento, el buque se encontraba cerca del ojo del huracán Joaquín, que se había fortalecido hasta alcanzar la categoría 3. Los medios de salvamento iniciaron las operaciones de búsqueda y rescate. Los equipos de rescate iniciaron las operaciones de búsqueda, que incluyeron el sobrevuelo de la última posición conocida del buque por un avión de seguimiento de huracanes de la Guardia Aérea Nacional de Estados Unidos. Cuando las condiciones del huracán amainaron, los guardacostas estadounidenses iniciaron nuevas operaciones de búsqueda, con ayuda de medios comerciales contratados por el propietario del buque. En la búsqueda se localizaron restos del EL FARO y un tripulante fallecido. Durante estas operaciones de búsqueda y rescate no se localizó a ningún superviviente
