Cuestiones de Limpieza y Orden: Pisos Limpios, Pasillos Despejados, un Lugar de Trabajo más Seguro

Lo que Sucedió

Durante años, los investigadores de la OSHA encontraron repetidamente las mismas condiciones en las tiendas Dollar General de todo Estados Unidos: pasillos bloqueados por carritos con ruedas, salidas de emergencia ocultas detrás de la mercadería y extintores inaccesibles detrás de pilas de inventario. Los trabajadores se enfrentaban a estos peligros en cada turno. En agosto de 2023, un hombre armado entró a una tienda Dollar General en Jacksonville, Florida, y abrió fuego, matando a tres personas. Las grabaciones de seguridad mostraron un laberinto de carritos metálicos, contenedores altísimos y pilas desordenadas de productos que obstruían las rutas de salida de la tienda, y la OSHA inició una investigación por muerte y catástrofe el 26 de agosto de 2023, citando como factor las leyes federales contra las salidas bloqueadas y los pasillos congestionados.

¿Qué Salió Mal?

Los riesgos eran conocidos, estaban documentados y se ignoraron. El propio administrador regional de la OSHA había advertido por escrito que «los segundos que se pierden tratando de mover cajas para llegar a un extintor o salir por una salida de emergencia pueden marcar la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte en una emergencia». A pesar de las multas propuestas por más de 21 millones de dólares en más de 240 inspecciones desde 2017, seguían apareciendo las mismas fallas de mantenimiento: salidas bloqueadas, pasillos abarrotados y mercancía apilada de manera insegura. El mal mantenimiento no fue un accidente. Fue un patrón no corregido con el que los trabajadores convivían todos los días.

Conclusión

Como parte de un acuerdo de 12 millones de dólares con la OSHA en 2024, Dollar General tuvo que garantizar que las salidas de emergencia tuvieran accesos despejados, que los pasillos estuvieran libres de obstáculos y que el inventario se apilara de manera segura —medidas que deberían haber sido una práctica estándar desde el primer día. Los pasillos desordenados y las salidas bloqueadas no son un inconveniente menor. Son un peligro documentado que pone en riesgo la vida. Un buen mantenimiento mantiene todas las salidas abiertas y garantiza la seguridad de todos los trabajadores.
