  1. Inicio de la Deshidratación: Trabajar en condiciones de calor extremo agota rápidamente los fluidos corporales; la deshidratación reduce la capacidad de sudoración, eleva la temperatura corporal y acelera las enfermedades relacionadas con el calor.
  2. Aumento de la Temperatura Corporal: Cuando el cuerpo absorbe más calor del que puede liberar, la temperatura interna aumenta rápidamente, lo que provoca agotamiento por calor y, potencialmente, un golpe de calor mortal.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • En Columbia Británica (Canadá), WorkSafeBC aceptó 315 reclamaciones por lesiones relacionadas con el calor entre 2020 y 2024, con las cifras más altas en sectores al aire libre como la construcción, el transporte y las obras públicas.
  • Se estima que 32 millones de trabajadores estadounidenses realizan trabajos al aire libre y se enfrentan a una media de 21 días de trabajo inseguros en verano debido al calor, siendo los trabajadores de la agricultura y la construcción 20 veces más propensos a sufrir muertes relacionadas con el calor que los de otros sectores.
  • Entre 2020 y 2024, los episodios de calor extremo aumentaron entre un 40 % y un 60 % el riesgo de enfermedades relacionadas con el calor para los trabajadores al aire libre canadienses del sector agrícola y de la construcción, debido a la fatiga y la reducción de la concentración.
  • En Estados Unidos, el estrés térmico laboral aumenta la temperatura corporal central (r = 0,44), la temperatura de la piel (r = 0,44) y la frecuencia cardíaca (r = 0,38) de los trabajadores al aire libre, según un metaanálisis de 2409 personas monitorizadas en 38 estudios.
  • Los trabajadores agrícolas estadounidenses experimentan una mortalidad relacionada con el calor de 3,06 muertes por cada millón de trabajadores al año (2020-2025), 35 veces más que la media de todos los sectores.
  • En Canadá, el estrés térmico contribuye al 10-15 % de las reclamaciones por tiempo perdido en sectores al aire libre como la agricultura y la construcción (2020-2024), con unas previsiones de 25 000 millones de dólares en costes económicos derivados de las condiciones meteorológicas extremas para 2025.
