Hombre que comió en restaurante murió de salmonela.

COLUMBIA – Un hombre de 58 años murió por complicaciones de intoxicación alimentaria después de comer en un restaurante tipo buffet en Camden la semana pasada, dijo el miércoles el forense del condado de Kershaw, Johnny Fellers.

La muerte, así como 176 casos de intoxicación alimentaria reportados, llevó a las autoridades a emitir un aviso de salud pública en todo el estado para cualquier persona que comió en el restaurante Old South desde el jueves pasado hasta el domingo.

James Arledge, de Lugoff, falleció la madrugada del domingo en su domicilio tras sufrir una infección en el torrente sanguíneo por salmonela, según Fellers.

Arledge comió pavo y aderezo, pollo, arroz, guisantes y tarta de manzana en el buffet el jueves por la noche.

Pero el portavoz del DHEC, Thom Berry, dijo que la agencia todavía está tratando de localizar la fuente de la salmonela.

Hasta el miércoles, 65 personas habían sido atendidas en la sala de urgencias del Centro Médico del Condado de Kershaw, y 25 pacientes habían sido ingresados, dijo el director ejecutivo del hospital, Donnie Weeks. Al menos una persona había sido dada de alta el miércoles, dijo Weeks. El DHEC informó de que otras siete personas habían sido hospitalizadas.

La primera persona ingresó el pasado viernes por la mañana. La mayoría de los pacientes han recibido fluidos por vía intravenosa y antibióticos y sus condiciones parecen estar mejorando, dijo Weeks.

El DHEC ha recibido llamadas sobre posibles intoxicaciones alimentarias de zonas tan lejanas como Charleston y Rock Hill.

Tras recibir llamadas del hospital el domingo, el DHEC envió personal al hospital e inspeccionó el restaurante el lunes. El restaurante recibió una “A”, la misma calificación que había recibido tras una inspección anterior.

Sin embargo, tras la noticia de la intoxicación alimentaria, el restaurante cerró voluntariamente el martes. Un mensaje dejado allí el miércoles no fue devuelto inmediatamente.

La camarera Naomi Geddes, hablando en nombre de los propietarios, dijo a WIS-TV en Columbia el lunes: “Sé a ciencia cierta que mantienen su comida fresca.”

La investigación sobre el brote no es tan inusual, pero las muertes atribuidas a la salmonela han sido raras en Carolina del Sur.
