Advertencia de la esposa tras la muerte de su marido por el hábito de las bebidas energéticas

Para John Reynolds, tomar una bebida energética de camino al trabajo parecía una buena forma de mantenerse alerta para su turno de noche.

Pero su mujer, Cassondra, de California (EE.UU.), dice que era un hábito que acabaría matándolo, informa The Sun.

El hombre de 41 años, que no bebía ni fumaba, murió en febrero de 2011 tras sufrir un paro cardíaco.

El padre de tres hijos trabajaba por las noches como mecánico y solía consumir una bebida energética de camino.

Una mañana, Cassondra se despertó y escuchó a su marido jadeando y tuvo que practicarle la reanimación cardiopulmonar mientras esperaba desesperadamente a los servicios de emergencia.

Más tarde se enteró de que había sufrido una parada cardíaca y fue trasladada inmediatamente al hospital, donde se le conectó a un sistema de respiración artificial y se le indujo a un coma médico.

Desgraciadamente, sólo unas semanas más tarde, John fue declarado en muerte cerebral, y Cassondra tuvo que tomar la desgarradora decisión de desconectar su soporte vital.

La pareja, que llevaba 10 años de relación, tenía tres hijos juntos de cinco, seis y ocho años.

“John estaba sano, hacía ejercicio todos los días, se había sometido a un examen físico completo el mes anterior y todos los resultados estaban bien”, dijo Cassondra.

“Cuando fue al hospital, el médico me dijo que sus niveles de azúcar estaban por las nubes y me hizo todo tipo de preguntas sobre su estilo de vida, si tomaba drogas y si tenía algún problema de salud.

“Le pusieron en coma inducido y en estado terapéutico de hipotermia para tratar de evitar más daños en el cerebro por falta de oxígeno.

“Finalmente, el médico me preguntó si tomaba bebidas energéticas, a lo que respondí que sí, pero sólo una vez al día”.

El médico le explicó a Cassondra que bastaba una sola bebida energética para alterar el ritmo del corazón y provocar una arritmia cardíaca.
