QUÉ ESTÁ EN RIESGO

Trabajar en altura sobre un elevador o plataforma significa que una caída desde incluso una altura moderada puede acabar con una carrera o una vida. Estas máquinas hacen posible el trabajo difícil, pero exigen tu atención completa cada vez que las usas.

CUÁL ES EL PELIGRO

Los elevadores de tijera y las plumas parecen estables y sencillos de operar. Eso es parte de lo que los hace peligrosos: los trabajadores se confían y empiezan a tomar atajos.

Golpe por Objetos o Peligros Aéreos

  • Las líneas eléctricas sobre el área de trabajo son una causa principal de electrocución en elevadores
  • Las herramientas o materiales no asegurados que caen de la plataforma pueden golpear a personas debajo
  • Trabajar cerca de vehículos o equipos en movimiento sin un observador

Caídas desde la Plataforma

  • Inclinarse sobre la baranda para alcanzar algo que está fuera de alcance
  • Pararse sobre la barra intermedia o un balde para ganar altura adicional
  • No usar o enganchar un arnés de detención de caídas cuando es requerido

Volcaduras Elevar un equipo sobre terreno irregular, pasar sobre una zona blanda o extender una pluma más allá del ángulo permitido puede hacer que toda la máquina vuelque. Estos incidentes ocurren rápido y rara vez hay supervivientes.

Falla Mecánica Usar un elevador que no ha sido inspeccionado, tiene un defecto conocido o ha superado su fecha de mantenimiento te deja a merced de lo que falle primero. Las inspecciones previas al uso existen exactamente por esta razón.

Operadores No Capacitados Cada modelo de elevador es diferente. Los controles, los límites de peso y los ángulos de operación seguros varían. Operar equipos para los que no has sido capacitado — incluso si has usado una máquina similar — es un riesgo serio.

COMO PROTEGERSE

El trabajo seguro en altura empieza en el suelo, antes de que lo abandones.

Inspecciona antes de Operar

  • Realiza una inspección previa al uso cada vez — verifica los controles, barandas, ruedas, niveles de fluidos y el punto de anclaje del arnés
  • Si algo está desgastado, dañado o falta, etiqueta el equipo fuera de servicio y repórtalo antes de usarlo
  • Nunca asumas que la última persona lo revisó — conviértelo en tu hábito, en cada turno

Conoce el Terreno antes de Subir Antes de elevar la plataforma, mira qué hay debajo de ti. ¿El suelo es firme y nivelado? ¿Hay rejillas, zonas blandas, desagües o pendientes cerca? Una superficie que parece sólida puede ceder bajo el peso de un elevador cargado. Si no estás seguro, no subas hasta que alguien confirme que es seguro.

Usa y Engancha tu Arnés Cuando se requiere un arnés, usarlo no es suficiente — debes enganchar la cuerda de vida al punto de anclaje dentro de la plataforma. Un arnés sin enganchar no sirve de nada. Conviértelo en un hábito innegociable. Si tu arnés no ajusta correctamente o el punto de anclaje parece desgastado o dañado, detente y resuélvelo antes de subir.

Permanece Dentro de las Barandas — Siempre

  • Nunca te inclines sobre la baranda para extender tu alcance — reposiciona el elevador
  • Nunca te pares sobre la barra intermedia, un balde u otro objeto para ganar altura
  • Si no puedes alcanzar desde dentro de la plataforma de forma segura, baja y mueve el equipo

Revisa los Peligros Aéreos Antes de elevar la plataforma, mira hacia arriba. Verifica si hay líneas eléctricas, tuberías, rociadores, vigas y cualquier otro obstáculo aéreo. Conoce la distancia de despeje que necesitas y mantenla durante todo el trabajo. Si no estás seguro de la distancia de despeje, detente y pregunta.

Aléjate si Algo Sale Mal

  • Si la plataforma deja de responder o la máquina empieza a inclinarse o desplazarse, no saltes — quédate en la plataforma y agárrate
  • Activa la alarma o pide ayuda inmediatamente
  • Si estás en el suelo y ves que un elevador vuelca o cae, aléjate de la zona de caída y llama a los servicios de emergencia de inmediato

CONCLUSIÓN

Cada vez que subes a un elevador, tomas la decisión de ser cuidadoso o de arriesgarte. Toma la decisión correcta siempre — inspéctalo, engancha el arnés y nunca te estires más allá de lo que es seguro. El suelo está muy abajo.
