La fatiga y la velocidad del conductor causaron un accidente mortal en autobús, según los investigadores

A excepción de algunas siestas, el conductor del autobús que se estrelló el año pasado en el Bronx, matando a 15 pasajeros, no había dormido mucho en los tres días anteriores al accidente, según concluyeron el martes los investigadores federales.

En su audiencia final sobre el accidente, la Junta Nacional de Seguridad en el Transporte atribuyó el accidente a la fatiga del conductor, privado de sueño. Los investigadores dijeron que los registros de su teléfono móvil y de una agencia de alquiler de coches mostraban que el conductor, Ophadell Williams, había estado conduciendo por la zona de Nueva York y hablando casi continuamente por teléfono cuando debería haber estado descansando.

El accidente podría haberse evitado si el Sr. Williams no hubiera tenido tanto sueño y no hubiera conducido tan deprisa, dijeron los investigadores. Determinaron que el autobús había estado viajando tan rápido como podía – 78 millas por hora – justo antes del accidente y que iba a 64 m.p.h. cuando se desvió contra una barandilla en la Interestatal 95.

“Juntos, el cansancio y la velocidad son una combinación especialmente letal”, declaró Deborah A. P. Hersman, presidenta de la junta de seguridad, durante la vista celebrada en Washington. “Este accidente mortal no tenía por qué haber ocurrido”.

La junta también determinó que la empresa con sede en Brooklyn que empleaba al Sr. Williams -World Wide Travel of Greater New York- no había llevado un registro de su conducción ni había mantenido controles de seguridad adecuados.

Williams, que sufrió heridas leves en el accidente, fue acusado el pasado otoño de homicidio involuntario y homicidio por negligencia. Se declaró inocente y desde entonces está encarcelado en Rikers Island bajo fianza de 250.000 dólares.
