Charla de seguridad sobre la distracción al caminar (uso del teléfono móvil)

Al igual que ocurre con la conducción distraída, una persona puede distraerse mientras camina si está sumida en sus pensamientos o, más comúnmente, si envía mensajes de texto, habla o escucha música mientras habla por su teléfono móvil. Los científicos llaman a este fenómeno “ceguera por falta de atención”. El cerebro humano sólo puede concentrar adecuadamente la atención en una tarea a la vez, de modo que cuando uno está enviando mensajes de texto o hablando por teléfono mientras intenta caminar, no puede prestar toda su atención a ambas tareas. Cada año, más y más personas se lesionan como resultado de la distracción al caminar. Con la necesidad cada vez mayor de nuestros teléfonos móviles y dispositivos inteligentes, caminar distraído se ha convertido en un problema muy real y serio.

Las lesiones por distracción al caminar en las que están implicados los teléfonos móviles supusieron unas 11.101 lesiones entre 2000 y 2011, lo que las convierte en una importante amenaza para la seguridad. La tendencia es tan alarmante que se incluyó por primera vez en el informe estadístico anual del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad, Injury Facts, que hace un seguimiento de las principales causas de lesiones y muertes no intencionadas.

Implicaciones del caminar distraído en el lugar de trabajo

La lista de problemas que el caminar distraído puede crear en el lugar de trabajo es interminable. Algunos ejemplos básicos de cómo el uso de un teléfono móvil mientras se camina en el trabajo puede provocar lesiones son

  • Chocar con objetos fijos
  • Ser golpeado por vehículos o equipos en movimiento
  • Caminar sobre un borde o dentro de un agujero abierto
  • Tropezar con un objeto
  • Caminar por debajo de una carga levantada

COMO PROTEGERSE

Consejos de seguridad

Para estar seguro y alerta cuando camine, tenga en cuenta estos importantes consejos:

  • Si debe utilizar auriculares u otros dispositivos electrónicos, mantenga un volumen en el que pueda seguir escuchando los sonidos del tráfico y de su entorno.
  • Si necesita hablar con un niño o con la persona que está a su lado, hacer una llamada telefónica, enviar un mensaje de texto o cualquier otra acción que pueda distraerle del objetivo de llegar a su destino de forma segura, deténgase y hágalo lejos del flujo de tráfico peatonal.
  • Mientras camina, concéntrese en las personas, los objetos y los obstáculos que le rodean.
  • No cruce la calle de forma imprudente. Cruza las calles con cuidado, preferiblemente en un semáforo, permaneciendo atento al flujo de tráfico peatonal y a los coches y bicicletas que hay en la calzada o cerca de ella.
  • Mire hacia arriba, no hacia abajo, especialmente cuando se baje o suba a los bordes de las aceras o en medio de las intersecciones principales; y/o cuando camine o se acerque por las escaleras o las escaleras mecánicas.
  • Manténgase alerta en los aparcamientos de los centros comerciales y otros, así como en las calles y sus alrededores, especialmente durante los meses de invierno, cuando oscurece más temprano y es menos probable que los conductores le vean.

CONCLUSIÓN

Sea consciente del uso de su teléfono móvil tanto dentro como fuera del trabajo. Aunque las investigaciones han demostrado que la mayoría de las lesiones se producen en el hogar debido a la distracción al caminar, las consecuencias de hacerlo en el trabajo pueden ser mucho más graves. Las áreas de trabajo y las tareas que se realizan en ellas cambian constantemente. Lo último que necesitas es poner toda tu atención en la pantalla de tu teléfono móvil.
