El fallo de una grúa provocó la muerte de un pescador a bordo de un pesquero la pasada primavera: TSB.

La Junta de Seguridad en el Transporte de Canadá publicó el miércoles su informe de investigación.

La investigación federal sobre la muerte de un pescador el año pasado en el oeste de la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo concluyó que el fallo de la grúa provocó la muerte.

  • Troy Jeffery murió el pasado mes de abril mientras trabajaba en una barcaza de ostras frente a Poplar Grove, cerca de Milligan’s Wharf, en la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo.
  • Troy Jeffery, de 46 años, identificado como el hombre fallecido en el accidente industrial de Poplar Grove.

La TSB investiga la muerte de Troy Jeffery.

Jeffery era el gerente de Five Star Shellfish en Ellerslie, P.E.I., negocio del que era copropietario con sus hermanos Wyatt y Gordon desde 2001.

En el momento de su muerte, la Junta de Seguridad en el Transporte de Canadá (TSB) no tenía detalles sobre los factores que contribuyeron a la misma, pero el informe de su investigación se hizo público el miércoles, más de un año después del fatal incidente.

Diseño defectuoso de la grúa

Según el informe, aquel día del pasado abril Jeffery estaba trabajando en la borda de una pequeña barcaza, tratando de desenredar una cuerda de sujeción sujeta a una jaula flotante para ostras que se encontraba bajo la pluma elevada de una grúa, aunque no menciona a Jeffery por su nombre.

El diseño de la grúa era defectuoso, explicó Terry Hiltz, investigador principal de la oficina regional de la TSB en Dartmouth, N.S.

Según Hiltz, el fallo hizo que se rompiera una parte de la grúa. La pluma y el aparejo golpearon a Jeffrey, matándolo al instante.

La investigación también descubrió que la tripulación y la empresa no detectaron el fallo de diseño, ni realizaban una inspección visual minuciosa antes de cada viaje.

Según Hiltz, en Canadá no existen reglamentos ni normas que obliguen a inspeccionar minuciosamente equipos como las grúas de este tipo de buques pesqueros.

“Sin ningún tipo de reglamento, ni cumplimiento de las normas, ni inspecciones, ni estándares a los que atenerse… los defectos de los equipos pueden pasar desapercibidos”, añadió. “Este barco en concreto no se dio cuenta”.
