Esta imagen muestra una obra de estructura residencial en la que un carpintero trabaja solo en una posición incómoda, estirándose por la esquina de una pared parcialmente construida para volver a unirla a una estructura contigua. Sostiene una clavadora neumática con su mano no dominante, inclinada hacia atrás, hacia su propio cuerpo, para poder clavar desde una posición inusual. No lleva protección para los ojos ni casco. Cerca de ahí, un rollo de manguera de aire serpentea por el piso, conectado a un compresor que funciona a plena presión. En un banco de trabajo al fondo, hay una pequeña pila de gatillos de repuesto para la clavadora junto a una herramienta —incluido un tipo de gatillo que claramente ha sido cambiado respecto a cómo venía de fábrica—. No hay ningún supervisor ni responsable de seguridad presente, y no se ve en ninguna parte de la obra señalización ni material informativo relacionado con el uso de herramientas neumáticas.

Ninguno de estos detalles parece inusual en un lugar de trabajo de ritmo acelerado —un trabajador asomándose por detrás de una pared, una herramienta modificada, la falta de EPP—. Pero cada uno de ellos elimina una capa de protección entre el trabajador y una lesión grave o mortal. Una pistola clavadora que golpea una superficie inesperada puede dispararse al instante, y sin protección para los ojos, un trabajador que se encuentre en la línea de fuego no tiene defensa alguna. El aire comprimido y las herramientas neumáticas generan fuerzas lo suficientemente potentes como para causar lesiones permanentes o la muerte en una fracción de segundo: nunca modifiques los mecanismos de seguridad, usa siempre el EPP requerido y nunca coloques ninguna parte de tu cuerpo en la línea de fuego. Los pocos segundos que te toma revisar tu posición y tu equipo pueden marcar la diferencia entre terminar el trabajo y no volver a casa.
