  • Uso Inadecuado del EPP: El uso de un material de guante, un cartucho de respirador o una protección ocular inadecuados para un químico específico genera una falsa sensación de seguridad, al tiempo que deja al trabajador expuesto.
  • Efectos Tardíos en la Salud: Algunas de las enfermedades más graves relacionadas con los químicos pueden tardar veinte años o más en desarrollarse después de la exposición, lo que hace que la detección temprana y las medidas de protección constantes sean fundamentales, incluso cuando no se observan daños visibles.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • Se estima que los requisitos de la OSHA sobre comunicación de riesgos y etiquetado de sustancias químicas han evitado entre 107,000 y 459,000 lesiones químicas agudas en el lugar de trabajo.
  • Según el expediente normativo de la Norma de Comunicación de Riesgos de la OSHA, se estimó que los empleados de sectores no manufactureros sufrían enfermedades y lesiones químicas agudas a una tasa de 13 671 lesiones, 38 248 enfermedades y 102 muertes al año.
  • La tasa de enfermedades crónicas asociadas a la exposición a sustancias químicas en el lugar de trabajo se estimó en 17 153 enfermedades crónicas, 25 388 casos de cáncer y 12 890 muertes por cáncer al año.
  • En el sector manufacturero, se estima que entre 40 000 y 50 000 trabajadores padecen enfermedades de origen químico anualmente, con un promedio de 10 000 reclamaciones de indemnización laboral presentadas cada año por enfermedades o lesiones químicas.
  • Una norma definitiva de la OSHA de 2024 actualizó la Norma de Comunicación de Riesgos para alinearla con la séptima revisión del Sistema Globalmente Armonizado, con plazos de cumplimiento escalonados hasta 2028.
  • La comunicación de riesgos en la industria general se ubicó entre las 10 normas de la OSHA más citadas en el año fiscal 2024.
  • Las enfermedades respiratorias fueron la categoría más comúnmente reportada en los datos de lesiones y enfermedades de la OSHA de 2024.
