FACTS

1. Barge ramps can become slippery, especially when wet or when carrying materials that can cause surfaces to become slick.
2. If a barge ramp is not properly maintained or is overloaded beyond its capacity, there is a risk of structural failure.
3. During the loading or unloading process, there is a risk of workers or equipment falling overboard from the barge ramp.
4. Barge ramps are often used in conjunction with heavy equipment, such as cranes, forklifts, or loaders.
5. If hazardous materials are being loaded or unloaded from barges, there is an increased risk of spills or leaks.
6. Insufficient training of personnel involved in barge ramp operations can lead to safety hazards.
7. Inadequate lighting along the barge ramp can impede visibility, especially during nighttime operations.
8. Weather conditions such as strong currents, high winds, or icy conditions can make barge ramp operations more hazardous.

STATS

• 305 employees were killed on barge ramps, and 379 explosions or fires occurred on barges or towboats, killing 14 employees.
• Gangway accidents are a serious problem.  The ABS Mariner Safety Research database has indicated that approximately 6% of gangway incidents result in a fatality.  Another 60% of gangway-related injuries can be severe enough to result in lost time on the job.
• 305 persons were killed while working aboard a barge ramps.
