¿Pueden los buques autónomos reducir las tasas de mortalidad en la industria naval y logística?

La prematura muerte de 17 tripulantes de la Marina estadounidense ha reforzado la idea de los buques autónomos. Una serie de trágicos sucesos de los que hemos sido testigos este año nos han hecho reflexionar sobre el uso de buques autónomos para reducir los errores humanos. Incluso la mayor autoridad en seguros de transporte y logística, el TT Club, habla de los peligros de trabajar en el mar.

La noticia de una segunda muerte trágica sacudió el barco esta semana. Un conductor murió atropellado por un contenedor frigorífico que cayó sobre su camión. La mayoría de los líderes sindicales culpan a los sistemas automatizados y manejados por el hombre, que requieren una actualización periódica. En casi el 15% de los accidentes están implicados equipos pesados, como apiladoras, grúas o carretillas pórtico, con el consiguiente riesgo de lesiones graves y muerte. Casi el 30% de los accidentes se producen en el sector de la manipulación de mercancías, en el que están implicados vehículos pesados como camiones (23%), grúas (19%), carretillas pórtico (13%), etc., informa el TT Club.

La introducción de la tecnología en los puertos y terminales mitigará los peligros, ya que la mayoría de los procesos mecánicos se realizan allí, lo que explica las elevadas reclamaciones de seguros (precisamente, un tercio) presentadas a los corredores. Sin embargo, debe ir acompañada de los procedimientos operativos pertinentes para proteger al personal, la carga y los visitantes.

El TT Club destaca los 4 procedimientos operativos que podrían reducir drásticamente la siniestralidad. El sistema de tráfico unidireccional para la gestión de la carga es el paso inicial que minimizará los peligros en los puertos y mejorará la tasa de productividad. Limitar el acceso a visitantes no autorizados y sin formación es otra medida que podría resultar útil. La última recomendación es disponer de un lugar seguro y separado para que los camioneros puedan bloquear y desbloquear los cierres giratorios de remolques y chasis. Aunque esto es responsabilidad del conductor, la mayoría tiene prohibido salir del vehículo.

Aunque las máquinas se estropean a veces, algunos aspectos requieren automatización. Así se creará un sistema programado para guiar a distancia a los camiones hasta el lugar ideal para la carga y descarga, lejos de la presencia humana. Ahí radican las ventajas y los inconvenientes de un sistema de funcionamiento autónomo. Podemos programar máquinas para la carga, descarga y transporte de mercancías, pero el control final requiere la intervención humana.

La salida es la creación de un entorno sin riesgos. Aunque no sea posible eliminar totalmente el riesgo, la automatización puede reducirlo considerablemente.
