Occupational safety programs are designed to take preventative measures by improving the environment and employee practices in a workplace. The utilization of warning signs to indicate and define specific hazards are just one of many essential tools in helping employees identify and avoid hazards. Communication with employees via safety meeting(s) is an essential way to communicate safe practices in avoiding accidents. Accident recording/reporting and employee training will also assist in creating a safer workplace.

Causes of an Accident

• Defective equipment
• Nonconductive working conditions (inadequate lighting, extreme temperatures)
• Employees under the influence of drugs or alcohol
• Employees who exhibit signs of aggressive or violent
• Employees who work with hazardous materials
• Workers with special needs
• Employees who have not been adequately trained

Safety Programs

When instating a safety program, employers should incorporate company policy on the subject of accident prevention and investigation. The following should be included in:

• A statement of the company’s commitment to
• Establishment of a safety committee
• Outline of the supervisor’s responsibilities (ex., filling out accident report forms, disciplining those that disobey safety rules, orienting new workers about safety issues etc)
• A list of employee’s accident reporting responsibilities
• A plan for accident investigation and reporting
• Procedures for correcting hazards and handling injuries and emergencies
• A description of safety training and education programs for both employees and
• A mention of your internal safety inspections policy or a copy of the inspection
• A description of job safety analysis measures designed to identify and eliminate problem
• A statement about personal protective equipment
• A warning of work rules, disciplinary actions, or a recap of the penalties for safety
• A statement of your physical examination
• A mention of workers’ compensation benefits and required
• A list of the first-aid station locations and use
