A man died after a fire burned through a Pomona home early Wednesday, officials said.

The man, whose name has not been revealed by authorities, was pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital after flames tore through the house at 286 Quaker Road, Hillcrest Fire Chief Chris Bowers said.

No information was immediately available from Haverstraw police or the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the fire.

A neighbor called in the fire at 3:03 a.m. after seeing flames at the house, Bowers said. Flames were spreading outside the back of the one-story house to the roof when firefighters arrived, he said, and a neighbor told firefighters that the homeowner may have been inside.

Firefighters searched the home and found the man, who was the only person in the house, unconscious in a bedroom, Bowers said. Firefighters performed CPR on the man until an ambulance crew arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

About 75 firefighters from five departments spent about 45 minutes getting the blaze under control, Bowers said. Flames jumped into the attic and caused significant damage to the house, he said.

Firefighters found smoke detectors in the home, which is for sale, but the smoke detectors did not appear to be working, Bowers said.

Firefighters from Monsey, Spring Valley, Suffern and Thiells also responded, Bowers said.
