  • Pisos Mojados y Contaminados: Los líquidos derramados, la grasa, el aceite y la humedad traída por los zapatos se encuentran entre los peligros más comunes en los pisos; una superficie que parece limpia puede seguir siendo peligrosamente resbaladiza después de fregarla, encerarla o someterla a un tratamiento químico.
  • Pasillos Abarrotados: Los carritos de inventario, las cajas, los palés y los cables sueltos que se dejan en los pasillos obligan a los trabajadores a realizar movimientos incómodos para esquivar los obstáculos, lo que aumenta el riesgo de dar un paso en falso o de chocar contra la maquinaria cercana.
  • Caídas al Mismo Nivel: Los trabajadores no necesitan caer desde una altura para sufrir una lesión grave. Resbalarse en un piso mojado o tropezarse con un objeto suele provocar fracturas, lesiones en la columna vertebral y traumatismos craneales.
  • Peligros Ocultos: La iluminación deficiente en las áreas de almacenamiento, las escaleras y las zonas de carga oculta derrames y defectos en el piso que, de otra manera, serían fáciles de evitar. Las fallas en el mantenimiento y la iluminación se agravan mutuamente.
  • Riesgos de Apilamiento y Almacenamiento: Los materiales apilados de manera inadecuada crean dos peligros a la vez: cargas inestables que pueden caer sobre los trabajadores y un espacio reducido en los pasillos que elimina las rutas seguras de desplazamiento y salida.
  • Retrasos en la Respuesta ante Derrames: Un derrame que se deja sin atender se vuelve más peligroso con cada minuto que pasa, ya que otros trabajadores ingresan al área sin darse cuenta de la situación.
  • Obstrucción de las Salidas: Los pasillos desordenados y las salidas bloqueadas no son solo un peligro diario de tropiezos; en caso de emergencia, pueden impedir que los trabajadores evacúen de manera rápida y segura.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • En 2024, 844 trabajadores estadounidenses fallecieron por caídas —el 17 por ciento de todas las muertes en el lugar de trabajo— y casi 480 000 sufrieron lesiones lo suficientemente graves como para requerir días de baja laboral, según el Consejo Nacional de Seguridad.
  • En 2024, 145 trabajadores estadounidenses fallecieron por caídas en el mismo nivel, incidentes directamente relacionados con las condiciones del piso, como superficies mojadas y desorden, según el Consejo Nacional de Seguridad.
  • Las caídas en el mismo nivel le cuestan a los empleadores estadounidenses casi 10 mil millones de dólares al año en gastos médicos y reclamaciones por salarios perdidos, según el Índice de Seguridad Laboral 2024 de Liberty Mutual.
  • Las superficies irregulares o mojadas son la principal causa de resbalones, tropiezos y caídas en el lugar de trabajo, y representan el 55 por ciento de estos incidentes, según datos de lesiones laborales de EE. UU.
  • En Canadá, los resbalones, tropiezos y caídas representan aproximadamente el 20 por ciento de las lesiones laborales en Columbia Británica —alrededor de 7,000 trabajadores al año entre 2020 y 2024—, provocadas en gran medida por pisos mojados y áreas de trabajo desordenadas, según datos de la WCB provincial.
  • Más de 40 000 trabajadores canadienses se lesionan anualmente debido a caídas, y las malas prácticas de limpieza y orden se identifican como un factor contribuyente principal, según Workplace Safety North.
