Trabajadores Peatones Atropellados y Muertos en Zonas de Trabajo de EE. UU.

Resumen del Patrón de Incidentes

Según la Administración Federal de Carreteras, 176 peatones — la mayoría de ellos trabajadores viales — fueron atropellados y muertos dentro de zonas de trabajo en EE. UU. en 2023. La proporción de fatalidades de trabajadores de carreteras causadas por un vehículo que golpeó a un trabajador aumentó del 35% en 2015 al 63% en 2021, con condiciones de poca luz, resplandor solar, resplandor de faros y fatiga visual del operador citados repetidamente entre los factores contribuyentes.

Hallazgos de Investigación (Nivel de Patrón)

El Boletín Científico 2024 de NIOSH sobre planes de control de tráfico interno y los archivos de casos de golpe del programa FACE identifican repetidamente los mismos factores contribuyentes: trabajo al amanecer, al anochecer y en turno nocturno realizado sin iluminación de tarea adecuada; resplandor solar y de faros que reduce la detección por parte del conductor de trabajadores con ropa de alta visibilidad; turnos largos que producen fatiga visual y tiempo de reacción más lento; y falta de separación positiva entre trabajadores a pie y tráfico en movimiento.

Peligros Clave Demostrados por el Patrón

La fatiga visual rara vez aparece como la única causa en un certificado de defunción, pero está consistentemente presente en la cadena de eventos: el operador que no vio al trabajador, el trabajador que no vio el vehículo, el paso resbaladizo en la escalera tenue, la señal perdida al final de un turno largo. Reducir el resplandor, mantener la iluminación según el estándar y gestionar la fatiga son controles directos.

Conclusiones para la Charla de Seguridad

Mantén la iluminación según el estándar en cada área de trabajo y reporta los accesorios fallidos de inmediato. Controla el resplandor con accesorios blindados, pantallas antirreflejos, viseras de gorras y gafas de seguridad de calidad. Aplica la regla 20-20-20 en el trabajo intensivo en pantalla — cada 20 minutos, mira a 20 pies de distancia durante 20 segundos. Gestiona la fatiga con descansos, rotación e informes honestos. Trata el trabajo al amanecer, al anochecer y nocturno como condiciones de riesgo elevado y ajusta el ritmo, el EPP y los controles de tráfico en consecuencia.
