Bombero que Respondía a una Llamada en Medio de una Densa Niebla Fallece al Salirse de la Carretera con su Vehículo Particular

Un bombero voluntario falleció y otro resultó herido cuando su vehículo particular se salió de la carretera mientras se dirigían por su cuenta a una llamada médica en una zona rural de Luisiana. El incidente ocurrió en las primeras horas de la mañana en condiciones de densa niebla, con visibilidad muy reducida y señalización mínima en la carretera. Cuando el vehículo se acercaba a una curva cerrada de 90 grados en una carretera rural sin señalizar, el conductor perdió de vista la carretera, lo que provocó que el vehículo se saliera del pavimento y chocara contra un grupo de árboles. Uno de los bomberos salió parcialmente expulsado del vehículo y fue declarado muerto en el lugar del accidente; el pasajero sufrió heridas leves.

Una investigación del NIOSH determinó que la baja visibilidad debido a la niebla, la falta de señalización en la carretera, la conducción distraída y la decisión de acudir sin una orden oficial fueron factores importantes que contribuyeron al accidente. El caso pone de relieve los riesgos extremos de conducir con niebla, donde la reducción de la distancia de visibilidad y los límites poco claros de la carretera pueden convertir rápidamente una respuesta de emergencia en una situación mortal.
