QUÉ ESTÁ EN RIESGO

Las herramientas de mano son el equipo más utilizado en casi cualquier lugar de trabajo y una de las fuentes de lesiones más subestimadas. El deslizamiento de una hoja, el contragolpe de una amoladora o un golpe de martillo mal dado pueden costar un dedo, dañar un ojo o romper un hueso en una fracción de segundo.

CUÁL ES EL PELIGRO

Porque las herramientas de mano son familiares y cotidianas, los trabajadores suelen dejar de darles el respeto que merecen. Esa familiaridad es exactamente lo que provoca lesiones: la gente deja de pensar en lo que podría salir mal porque hasta ahora no ha salido mal.

Usar la Herramienta Incorrecta para el Trabajo Usar un destornillador como cincel, una llave como martillo o un cuchillo como palanca aplica fuerza en una dirección para la que la herramienta no fue diseñada.

Herramientas Desafiladas o Dañadas

  • Una hoja desafilada requiere más fuerza, lo que significa menos control
  • Los mangos agrietados, las protecciones faltantes y los dientes doblados cambian el comportamiento de la herramienta bajo carga
  • Los cables dañados de herramientas eléctricas o los portabrocas sueltos son riesgos de choque eléctrico y contragolpe que esperan ocurrir

Sin EPP o EPP Incorrecto Cortar, esmerilar y golpear producen proyecciones. Los ojos son la parte del cuerpo más lesionada por el uso de herramientas de mano — y la mayoría de esas lesiones eran completamente prevenibles con la protección ocular adecuada.

Almacenamiento Deficiente y Orden Las herramientas dejadas en superficies elevadas caen sobre las personas. Las hojas expuestas en una caja de herramientas cortan las manos que buscan a ciegas. Los cables tendidos en los pasillos se convierten en riesgos de tropiezo. El mal orden convierte las herramientas en peligros antes de que alguien las tome.

Contragolpe de Herramientas Eléctricas

  • El contragolpe ocurre cuando una herramienta eléctrica se atasca o engancha y se lanza de vuelta hacia el operador
  • Las sierras circulares, las amoladoras angulares y los taladros son capaces de producir contragolpes graves
  • La fatiga, las prisas y el agarre inadecuado aumentan el riesgo

COMO PROTEGERTE

El uso seguro de herramientas es un hábito — las mismas verificaciones, siempre, sin atajos.

Inspecciona Cada Herramienta Antes de Usarla Toma diez segundos antes de tomar cualquier herramienta para revisarla. Verifica si hay grietas en el mango, daños en la hoja o punta, protecciones faltantes en herramientas eléctricas y cables desgastados. Una herramienta que parece estar bien desde lejos puede no estarlo. Si algo parece incorrecto — una cabeza suelta en un martillo, una protección doblada, un cable parcheado con cinta — retírala del servicio y repórtalo.

Usa la Herramienta Correcta para el Trabajo

  • Adapta la herramienta a la tarea: si la herramienta correcta no está disponible, consíguela, no improvises
  • Nunca uses una herramienta para algo para lo que no fue diseñada, ni siquiera ‘solo esta vez’
  • Si no sabes qué herramienta usar, pregunta — toma treinta segundos y te ahorra un viaje al botiquín

Usa tu EPP para la Tarea La protección ocular no es negociable para cortar, esmerilar, cincelar y cualquier tarea de golpe. Los guantes protegen contra cortes y abrasiones, pero nunca deben usarse cerca de herramientas eléctricas rotativas: los guantes pueden engancharse y jalar tu mano hacia la herramienta. Sabe qué EPP aplica a cada tarea y úsalo antes de comenzar, no después de que algo vuele hacia tu cara.

Controla la Herramienta, Controla el Riesgo

  • Mantén ambas manos en la herramienta cuando sea posible y conserva un agarre firme y estable
  • Nunca apuntes una herramienta cortante hacia tu cuerpo ni cargues una hoja con el filo expuesto
  • Deja que las herramientas eléctricas alcancen su velocidad máxima antes del contacto, y déjalas detenerse completamente antes de soltarlas
  • Asegura tu pieza de trabajo, no la sostengas en tu mano mientras cortas o taladras

Almacena las Herramientas Correctamente Después de Cada Uso Una herramienta en el lugar equivocado es un peligro para la siguiente persona que no la ve. Devuelve las herramientas a su lugar de almacenamiento designado después de cada uso, con hojas cubiertas o enfundadas, cables enrollados y protecciones reemplazadas. Nunca dejes herramientas en escaleras, bordes de andamios o superficies elevadas. Limpia y seca las herramientas antes de guardarlas — el óxido y la suciedad las hacen más difíciles de inspeccionar y más rápidas de deteriorar.

CONCLUSIÓN

Respeta la herramienta en tus manos. El trabajo más rutinario puede salir mal en menos de un segundo cuando una herramienta falla o se desliza. Inspecciónala, úsala correctamente, protégete y guárdala como es debido. Siempre.
