  1. Reducción del tiempo de reacción: la fatiga ralentiza las respuestas físicas y mentales, lo que hace que los trabajadores sean menos capaces de evitar peligros, reaccionar ante el movimiento de los equipos o corregir errores.
  2. Deterioro del sentido común: los trabajadores cansados subestiman los riesgos, toman decisiones erróneas y recurren a atajos que normalmente no tomarían, lo que aumenta el riesgo de accidentes y lesiones.
  3. Episodios de microsueño: la fatiga extrema provoca “apagones” momentáneos que duran segundos, lo suficiente como para no oír las alarmas, perder el control de las herramientas o desviarse mientras se conduce.
  4. Disminución de la coordinación: la fatiga debilita el equilibrio, la fuerza de agarre y el control motor fino, lo que aumenta la posibilidad de resbalones, caídas de herramientas o manejo incorrecto de los equipos.
  5. Sobrecarga cognitiva: los turnos largos y el trabajo nocturno sobrecargan la memoria y la atención, lo que hace que tareas complejas como la resolución de problemas, la conducción o el manejo de maquinaria sean más peligrosas.
  6. Reconocimiento más lento de los peligros: los trabajadores cansados pasan por alto las señales de advertencia, como ruidos inusuales en los equipos, olores químicos o cargas inestables, antes de que los peligros se agraven.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • En Canadá, el 47 % de los trabajadores declararon sentirse agotados en 2025, y el 31 % indicaron niveles de agotamiento más altos que el año anterior, debido en gran parte a la fatiga relacionada con los turnos y a las jornadas prolongadas.
  • El 97 % de los trabajadores estadounidenses tienen al menos un factor de riesgo de fatiga, y más del 80 % tienen dos o más, lo que contribuye al aumento de las lesiones y el absentismo en el trabajo por turnos entre 2020 y 2025.
  • Los trabajadores por turnos en Canadá se enfrentan a un riesgo un 30 % mayor de sufrir lesiones o problemas de salud en comparación con los trabajadores diurnos, y los turnos nocturnos y rotativos agravan los accidentes relacionados con la fatiga hasta 2025.
  • En Canadá, los trabajadores por turnos nocturnos y rotativos tienen tasas de lesiones hasta dos veces superiores a las de los trabajadores diurnos, y las mujeres que realizan turnos rotativos corren un riesgo 1,71 veces mayor debido a la interrupción del sueño.
  • Los turnos de tarde en los lugares de trabajo de Estados Unidos y Canadá muestran una tasa de lesiones un 18 % más alta, que aumenta hasta el 30 % en los turnos de noche, principalmente debido a que la fatiga afecta a los tiempos de reacción y a la toma de decisiones.
  • La fatiga contribuye hasta en un 13 % a las lesiones laborales en Estados Unidos, según los estudios sobre el riesgo de fatiga del NIOSH.
