  1. Contaminantes atmosféricos: el polvo, los humos, los vapores y las fibras penetran en los pulmones sin que nos demos cuenta; la exposición repetida provoca enfermedades respiratorias, irritación o daños orgánicos a largo plazo.
  2. Acumulación de gases tóxicos: los gases incoloros, como el monóxido de carbono o el sulfuro de hidrógeno, pueden acumularse rápidamente en espacios cerrados o mal ventilados, provocando una rápida pérdida de conciencia o la muerte.

ESTADÍSTICAS

  • En Estados Unidos, la exposición a sustancias o entornos nocivos ocupó el sexto lugar entre las causas más comunes de lesiones laborales en 2019, lo que contribuyó a aproximadamente 424 000 lesiones no mortales al año entre 2020 y 2025.
  • En 2023, la industria privada estadounidense notificó un total de 200 100 casos de enfermedad, de los cuales 47 500 fueron enfermedades sistémicas debidas a exposiciones nocivas (por ejemplo, a productos químicos o toxinas), lo que supone un descenso del 56,6 % con respecto a 2022 gracias a la mejora de los controles.
  • En Canadá, la exposición a sustancias cáusticas, nocivas o alergénicas fue la principal causa de lesiones en los lugares de trabajo del Anexo 1 en 2020, lo que supuso alrededor del 15 % de todas las reclamaciones por tiempo perdido admitidas.
  • En los lugares de trabajo del Anexo 2 de Canadá (por ejemplo, la asistencia sanitaria), la exposición a sustancias nocivas ocupó el segundo lugar en 2020, representando el 14 % de las reclamaciones por tiempo perdido, a menudo por riesgos biológicos o químicos.
  • En Ontario (Canadá), más de 2 millones de trabajadores recibieron indemnizaciones de la WSIB por enfermedades profesionales relacionadas con exposiciones nocivas entre 2020 y 2024, siendo los productos químicos y los carcinógenos las causas principales.
  • En los lugares de trabajo de EE. UU., el esfuerzo excesivo y las reacciones corporales (incluida la exposición a sustancias) provocaron 976 090 casos de baja laboral en 2021-2022, y el contacto con productos químicos contribuyó al 10-15 % de ellos.
