1 person dead after fire at Toronto shelter hotel, police say
One person has died following a fire at a Toronto shelter hotel, according to Toronto Fire Services.
One other person was treated for minor injuries at the scene, Toronto paramedics said.
Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told reporters on Monday that the fire department received a call about a fire on the fourth floor of the Toronto Plaza Hotel on Wilson Avenue near Jane Street at about 9:40 a.m.
“When fire crews arrived, they encountered smoke and flames”, Pegg said. They then entered a unit, where they found a person inside.
“That occupant was very quickly removed, brought downstairs, and transferred to the care of awaiting Toronto paramedics. Unfortunately, we have received confirmation that that occupant has been pronounced dead,” he said.
“On behalf of all of us, I extend my deepest condolences to family, the friend,s and everyone impacted by this tragic, fatal fire,” he added.
Paramedics said the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The person’s sex and age were not released and Toronto police have not released the person’s identity.
The fire was brought under control by 10:15 a.m.
