Trabajador atropellado por una carretilla elevadora, Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. citada por la OSHA

Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. ha sido citada por la OSHA después de que un trabajador fuera golpeado mortalmente por una carretilla elevadora en una terminal marítima de Detroit.

El 19 de noviembre de 2013, un trabajador fue golpeado por una carretilla elevadora de 62.000 libras de capacidad que transportaba una bobina de acero de 40.000 libras en la terminal marítima de Detroit. Tras la muerte del trabajador, la OSHA investigó y ha citado a Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. con nueve violaciones de seguridad, incluyendo dos intencionadas y siete graves.

 “Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. tiene la responsabilidad de capacitar a sus trabajadores en la operación segura de equipos peligrosos, y un trabajador perdió trágicamente su vida porque esta empresa no cumplió con esa responsabilidad”, dijo Larry Johnson, director de área de OSHA en Lansing. “La vida de un trabajador nunca debería ser el coste de hacer negocios”.

El atropello de vehículos y otros objetos es una de las principales causas de muerte en el lugar de trabajo. Aproximadamente el 75% de los accidentes mortales por atropello afectan a equipos pesados. Las causas de los accidentes por atropello suelen ser el movimiento inverso del vehículo hacia un peatón fuera del campo de visión del conductor, o la caída de los vehículos en rampas, pendientes o terrenos inestables. Las estrategias de prevención de accidentes consisten en asegurarse de que las alarmas de retroceso funcionan, comprobar la periferia del vehículo antes de conducirlo, mantenerse alerta, obedecer todas las normas y señales de tráfico, minimizar las distracciones, inspeccionar y mantener los vehículos, utilizar los cinturones de seguridad y encender los faros.

La OSHA emitió una citación intencionada por modificar una carretilla elevadora sin obtener la aprobación del fabricante. Se emitió una segunda citación intencionada por no establecer rutas para los vehículos, normas de tráfico y colocar señales que indicaran el tráfico peatonal en los lugares donde trabajan los empleados. Una infracción intencionada es aquella que se comete con un desprecio intencionado, consciente o voluntario de los requisitos de la ley, o con una clara indiferencia hacia la seguridad y la salud de los empleados.

Se citaron siete infracciones de seguridad graves. Cinco de ellas tienen que ver con la seguridad de las carretillas elevadoras, ya que no se capacitó a los empleados para que conocieran las instrucciones de uso, las advertencias y las precauciones que figuran en el manual del operador; no se mantuvieron los vehículos en condiciones de funcionamiento seguras; y no se indicó a los empleados que hicieran sonar la bocina cuando la visibilidad estuviera obstruida. Otras citaciones se referían a no realizar inspecciones mensuales de las grúas ni comprobar la capacidad de carga de los equipos de carga. Una infracción de la OSHA es grave si la muerte o los daños físicos graves pueden ser consecuencia de un peligro que el empleador conocía o debería haber conocido.
