Picture This: Walking the Plank – Without Fall Protection

Ingenuity at its finest or accident waiting to happen? In addition to the obvious lack of fall protection and precarious position this worker is in, the walking space on the plank is limited and awkward which makes any movement dangerous. Reach back for the hammer, lose balance, slam into the stair guardrails on the way to concrete floor below. Traumatic brain injury, broken back, multiple fractures? Maybe all three. That’s if he’s “lucky” enough to survive the fall.

Picture This: Unsafe Outriggers

What we’ve got here are a few people who aren’t concerned at all about stability or gravity. My question is how did everyone/anyone on these sites let this happen? Even if you’re not well-versed in safety regulations these situations look incredibly unsafe.

Picture This: Confined Space Whack-a-Mole

Permit-required confined space entry procedures must be part of your employers confined space entry program. Following these procedures will save your life and the lives of bystanders who may attempt rescue (unprepared and unprotected).

Using an angle grinder can be extremely dangerous for several reasons. If the wheel isn’t the right size or type, or is defective, it could break apart and become a dangerous projectile. One that can take off a finger, put out an eye, or do serious and sometimes fatal damage.

Frostbite is the freezing of the extremities (fingers, toes, nose, earlobes, etc.) caused by loss of blood flow, which can cause tissue damage and the need for amputation.  Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of frostbite so you can recognize and properly treat the condition.

Picture This: Would You Know What to Do?

A stroke is a blood clot preventing your brain from getting the blood it requires. The important thing is what you do if stroke symptoms happen; the sooner the treatment, the less chance of serious damage to the brain and less chance of permanent disability.

Picture This: Hazards of Working Alone

There are several unsafe conditions in this image that could be harmful to any worker, but especially for a lone worker. Use the Picture This to spark discussion about the hazards of working alone and the precautions and procedures your organization has in place to protect lone workers.

Picture this: You Make the Call

Use this Picture This as a tool to train and inform workers on injury prevention. Show them the image and ask them: Pretend you’re the supervisor who instructed this chap to do this work. First, think about how you would have set him up to be safe. Second, what would your reaction be if you pulled up to this scene and saw how the work was being performed. Then discuss their feedback and cover anything they might have missed.

Manually moving materials is one of the quickest and the most prevalent way to injure your back. Back injuries are painful for the worker and costly for the employer. To reduce back injuries at work, it is important to find and avoid risk factors that increase the chance of injury.
