Compactors and balers are used in industries such as wholesalers, retailers, manufacturing, garbage and recycling facilities, and other public entities to compress waste materials into smaller, more manageable loads. Using powered rams, waste materials such as garbage, paper, cardboard, cotton, metals, and plastic can be compressed and packed into containers or baled for transport. Workers can get seriously injured or killed if they reach inside or fall into a compactor or baler.
WHAT BALERS AND COMPACTORS DO: Functionally, balers and compactors do the same thing – take a big pile of material and make it smaller.
Baler: Balers compress and bundle recyclable materials ranging from cardboard and paper to plastics and scrap metal. The machine takes the material and forms it into dense and consistently shaped bales that are easy to store and transport. Most go off to a recycling company for resale and reuse.
One key way to decide on a baler for your operation is by size since the amount of space the machine takes up is limited by how much space you have.
Compactor: A compactor does the same job as a baler, just with non-recyclable materials. This could be food waste, general rubbish, and non-recyclable packaging.
It allows you to compress large volumes of rubbish into a contained space before it gets picked up by the waste haulier and taken to the landfill.
The value of a compactor is directly related to how much waste your company produces and what type. It can cut the size of your waste stream by two-thirds, turning three cubic yards of rubbish into one cubic yard.
They can be quite large, so you do need to have the space to house them.
Which One Is Right For You?: Choosing between balers vs compactors starts with an assessment of your business’s waste management plan. Four questions to answer are:
HAZARDOUS BALER/COMPACTOR WORK PRACTICES
These hazardous practices include the lack or failure of safety devices, and failure to develop and implement standard lockout/tagout procedures. Investigations indicates that workers suffered fatal injuries when they entered the compactor to clear a jam, fell into the travel path of the ram, or reached into the machine while performing operational procedures.
Failure of safety devices and lack of instruction and training in the operation of the equipment may have contributed to some of these deaths.
The key is to be competent with all safety devices on compactors and balers.
Guards, conveyors, remote chutes, control switches, and safety interlocks for doors and ports are designed to keep workers out of the compression chamber and out of harm’s way. Do not try to bypass safety features in order to perform maintenance, clear a jam, or ease the loading process. Use access ladders and platforms, or walk around moving conveyers. Use safe access points and consider fall protection if you are working over gravity-fed chutes or chambers. Watch out for the baling materials because they are under pressure and can snap if they are overloaded.
Follow the safe work practices designed for your machine and job tasks. Always clear the area and account for all workers before you activate a compactor or baler. Never reach into or enter a baler or compactor unless it has been de-energized. Always use lockout/tagout procedures before performing maintenance, inspections, or clearing jams. Jams are a frequent occurrence in baling and compacting operations, so design lockout/tagout procedures to be efficient and effective by marking the power points and wiring the machinery together to reduce the number of lockouts needed.
Get Training on the Use of the Compactor or Baler in Your Work Area.
Follow manufacturer’s recommendations on the maintenance, inspection, and use of the machine. Never overload the machine beyond the recommended capacity. Do not allow workers younger than 18 to operate a compactor or baler.
Know how the machine at the jobsite works; does it operate manually or on semiautomatic or automatic cycles? Does the machine have capacity sensors and when are they activated? With manual devices, the operator controls the ram; semiautomatic devices turn on and cycle only after a worker hits the switch; while automatic devices trigger the compression ram based on a capacity sensor. These features tell you when and how the machine will activate so you can avoid the powered ram.
Balers compress and bundle recyclable materials and compactors do the same job as a baler except with non-recyclable materials. But the end game is the same with both operations – take a big pile of material and make it smaller.
Balers and compactors were responsible for the follow deaths:
A 59-year-old man was killed Tuesday after he fell under an asphalt paver while working in the parking lot of a south Tulsa hotel.
Rick Deeter was operating the machine shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Marriott Southern Hills, near 71st Street and Lewis Avenue, when he was bucked from it, according to Tulsa Police Sgt. Shane Tuell.
The machine then rolled over him, and he likely died instantly, Tuell said.
Deeter was with a crew working to pave various sections of the parking lot when the accident occurred. Tuell said the workers began experiencing mechanical issues with the paver, so Deeter attempted to drive the machine onto a flatbed truck.
The paver then “began to jump and lurch,” Tuell said, which caused Deeter to fall beneath it.
Robert Losh, 30, was on the American Asphalt crew that was working on the project. Losh said he was out picking up more asphalt when the accident occurred.
“I met him today,” Losh said of Deeter. “He was an awesome guy.”

INTRODUCTION
Auto transmission repair can range from simple adjustments to parts replacements and complete overhauls. Work safely during auto transmission repair by following safe work practices.
WHEN TO CONSIDER A TRANSMISSION REPAIR
A car’s transmission consists of an incredible amount of parts. Each component of the transmission is important. However, each component of a car’s transmission can wear or take damage independently of every other part of the transmission. A transmission repair will replace only the parts needed to get your transmission back up and running.
Often, repairs work best when the problem is a surface level issue. If a technician or mechanic has to disassemble the transmission and all its subassemblies, the process can take more time and cost more as well. When the technician has to dig deep into the transmission to find the problem, a transmission rebuild can become a better option.
AUTO REPAIR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR TRANSMISSIONS
Working on or around vehicles can be dangerous if you fail to take basic safety precautions. Fortunately, the most common injuries are not serious or life threatening, but fatal accidents do occur. Working underneath a raised vehicle that is not properly secured presents the greatest risk for serious injury or death.
GENERAL REPAIR SAFETY PROTOCOL
Ensure that they are not too loose so that they do not get caught in moving parts. Remove your jewelry when you work on a car and tie back your hair if it is long.
Read the safety data sheet (SDS) for the chemicals you work with so you can understand their hazardous ingredients and characteristics. You need to know how to handle chemicals properly and what to do if there is an accidental exposure or spill.
A car´s transmission consists of a huge amount of parts. Auto transmission repair ranges from simple adjustments to parts replacement and complete overhands. By following safe work practices during auto transmission work safety is secured for mechanics and good service for consumers is provided.
Automobile repair services include inspections, maintenance, and repairs to vehicles. Repairs may require computer analysis, fluid changes, parts changes, or major mechanical work, exposing workers to fire and explosion hazards, chemicals, ergonomic strains, awkward postures, and tool and machinery safety concerns.
Mechanical: Use caution with jacks and aerial lifts. Know the rated capacity and the weight and center of gravity of the vehicle. When you use a jack, test to see if the vehicle is supported before you work underneath. Use support stands to protect you if the vehicle falls. When you use the aerial lift, know the vehicle’s lift points to ensure a balanced and stable lift. Periodically inspect and maintain your jacks and lifts.
Other mechanical hazards include moving engine parts such as drive belts, pulleys, and fans. Know where these parts are and keep your hands clear of them. Don’t lean over or reach into the engine compartment while someone else is behind the ignition key or revving the engine. Watch for rotating parts that can pull in your hand, sleeve, and arm and cause severe injury. Take caution around air bag technology; disable it before you begin work.
Burns: Hot fluids can scald your skin; allow the engine to cool before you work with hot parts and fluids. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Prevent shop fires. Don’t smoke around fuels or fuel-related parts. Don’t smoke or get sparks near the battery; it can give off explosive hydrogen. Use caution when working on fuel lines. Bleed line pressure and use a rag to absorb drips and sprays. Store flammable rags in fire-safety cans with self-closing lids.
Automotive work can require long days; pace yourself to prevent fatigue. Take frequent mini-breaks and rotate your work tasks throughout the day. Moving in and around a vehicle and reaching into cramped engine and electrical compartments may require awkward postures that can lead to ergonomic strains and sprains. Get the proper tools to allow you to reach your tasks comfortably and safely. Auto parts are heavy, so use proper lifting methods.
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – An auto mechanic died while working on Monday morning, according to Richmond police.

A car salvage firm was fined a total of £40,000 and ordered to pay £25,000 in costs after a car mechanic suffered severe burns when the inspection pit he was standing in burst into flames.
A recent case concerned the prosecution of a car salvage company for multiple health and safety and fire safety failings, following a joint investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) .
CCTV footage from the company shows an employee mechanic entering a workshop pit to remove fuel from a vehicle that was being dismantled. Seconds later he is seen running out as fire engulfs the pit. The company routinely removed engine and gear box oil, coolant and fuels from old vehicles in preparation for scrapping. It was common practice for mechanics to puncture the vehicles’ fuel tanks and allow the fuel to drain into open containers in the pit. An electric drill was sometimes used to puncture the tanks.
The investigation found that the accident was most likely to have been caused by a spark from either the electric drill or extension igniting the volatile vapour produced by the fuel in the open container. The fire grew rapidly in the presence of petrol and other combustible materials and required a major response from the FRS to control it, together with the assistance of the local police force to ensure the safety of the people nearby. The mechanic sustained severe burns to his hands, legs and nose in the fire, and has not been able to return to work since the incident.
Young Drivers And Motor Vehicle Accidents Safety Talk
Motor vehicle accidents cause many injuries and deaths every single year. In total, over 32,000 people die each year in the United States due to motor vehicle crashes. Young drivers, more than any other age group, are most likely to be the victims of motor vehicle crashes.
Crashes are a leading cause of death for teens. An average of six teenagers from the ages of 16 to 19 years old die from motor vehicle crash injuries every single day.
RISK FACTORS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES THAT ARE PARTICULARLY ELEVATED AMONG TEENAGE DRIVERS INCLUDE:
A positive factor for teen drivers is the presence of an adult passenger. One study showed that teen crash rates were 75% lower when an adult was in the car.
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR YOUNG DRIVERS
Obey the Speed Limit – This is a rule that goes without exception. You might feel “cool” driving fast and zipping in and out of traffic like your favorite actor or t.v. character, but it’s not cool when you cause a wreck and harm yourself or another driver on the road. Obey the posted speed limit; remember, it is the maximum speed that is allowed under normal conditions. Slow down when it’s raining, foggy, snowing, or icy, and keep at least twice the amount of normal stopping distance between you and the person in front of you. Always slow down and drive cautiously in heavy traffic, on curves, and especially in work zones.
Give Driving Your Full Attention – Taking your eyes off the road, even for only one second, can result in a crash, and potentially a fatal accident. Your focus when traveling should be the road and the road only. Program your radio stations or make your CD selections before you get on the road, never read or look at directions when you’re traveling, and plan your trip before you leave. You should also avoid putting on makeup, shaving, and eating when you’re driving. Most importantly, put the phone down and DO NOT TEXT while you’re on the road. Any message can wait at least long enough for you to pull over somewhere safe. No message is worth your life or the life of another!
Use the Lanes Properly – Make sure that you are in a legal passing zone before you pass another vehicle. Never pass on the right side of the road or on the shoulder of a roadway – it’s illegal and dangerous for you and other drivers. Remember to use your turn signals about 100 feet before making a turn, and don’t cross over into another lane of traffic. Finally, keep your vehicle in the center, and do not pass on hills, curves, or at intersections.
Never Mix Alcohol with Driving – Underage drinking is against the law to begin with, but you must NEVER attempt to drive home if you have alcohol, even if you think that you’re okay. Instead, ask a friend who hasn’t had any alcohol for a ride home. If no one has abstained from alcohol, call a parent, older sibling, or a cab to take you home, or stay at your friend’s home for the night. It is better to be cautious than to gamble with your life or the lives of others on the road. Additionally, if you see a friend of yours stumbling toward their car, take their keys from them and find them a safe way home.
PREVENTION
Parents
There are many things parents can do to make a difference in instilling safe driving behaviors in their children. Some best practices include:
The stats on teen driving deaths are staggering. It is important to have discussions about driving safely with the young people in your life, whether that is at home or on the job. As the parent, hold teens accountable if it is found out that they are taking part in risky behavior. If you supervise younger employees who drive, ensure all company rules are strictly enforced and they are understood by the employees. Never hesitate to address unsafe behaviors while driving- it can make all the difference in saving a life.
